Note: The following is a brief recap and accomplishments during my time in office along with thoughts about the future. I am honored to have been voted as Chair of the Board of Trustees multiple times and a lot has been accomplished. But, I have to say, thank you all the employees of Canfield Township, they make the plans happen! You all need to know that we have a great dedicated team that really cares about the Township!
A few recent accomplishments:
- Unanimously elected Chair of the Board multiple times
- Lead negotiator with public works union. Reached fair agreements
- Lead negotiator with City of Canfield and Schools for joint Resource Officer program
- Lead negotiator with Mahoning County Sheriff for Township police services
- Worked to negotiate an updated field agreement with the Canfield Soccer Club
Led the following:
- Installation of new streetlights for residents on a few township roads
- Updates at the community park
- Restoration of township hall- upstairs
- Significant technology updates and hall, park, and public works
Finances/Budget
- We operate very efficiently and always within budget, no major audit findings
- Canfield Township has no additional levies (like road or police) or income taxes and no plans to add any! We operate on what we have!
- Your tax dollars are leveraged to obtain grants for many projects
- Significant investments with great amounts of interest returned every year
- Generators installed at hall and public works with grant money.
- Digital Sign on the green with grant money.
- Pickleball courts to be built with private donations and grant money
Next Step for the Budget:
- Be prepared for any and all changes ie: property tax changes
- Continue the close working relationship with the Fiscal Officer
- Keep analyzing every line and asking questions like “why”
- No plans to ask for any levies from Township residents
- Go after as many grants as possible
Roads
- Currently working on a 5-year plan to pave entire developments along with roads close to each development
- Capitalizing on the .25% sales tax money
2023 - Covington Cove Development, part of Summit
2024 - Villa Rosa Development, Sperone, Woodland Place
Timbercrest, Mission Hills, August Hills.
Plus, Briarwood Court Project-Curb, Gutter, Paving
2025 - Fox Den Development, Meadowview, McCarty
2026 - Westbury Development, possibly others
- Annual street sweeping all curb and gutter streets
- Continue to support the best snow and ice removal crew in the County!
Next Step for Roads:
- Work an updated 5-year paving plan
- Will include catch basins, pipes curbs and gutters
- Continue with additional developments
- Pave as many roads as possible (provided .25% sales tax continues)
Infrastructure
- Canfield Township consistently leads Mahoning County in housing starts
- The majority of our catch basins and cross over pipes are repaired in house saving thousands of dollars
- Many projects by and with the ABC Water and Storm Water District to help in areas that the township is not permitted to work in
- Revere Run storm sewer replacement
- Implemented a Right of Way permitting process to protect against outside companies randomly “putting line in the ground”
Safety in your Township
- Canfield Township is one of the safest communities in the County
- Township police services are provided through an agreement with the Mahoning County Sheriff.
- By outsourcing this, we save hundreds of thousands of dollars and no tax levy is required.
- Trustees receive monthly reports of police activity and are made aware of any urgent matters in real time in the Township
Next Steps for Policing:
- Continue and enhance current agreement with Sheriff
- Add more patrols to monitor speeding and have a stronger presence
Public Works
- Keeping the Township moving …and we provide the vehicles and equipment
- A few newer equipment purchases; new plow trucks, enclosed trailer for hauling equipment, camera to record water/sewer lines, and a sewer truck
- Daily contact with residents for things like jet pipes, install pipes, repair sinkholes, tree work of all types, install signs, pick up dead animals, repairs of all types
Cemeteries
- We have two 2 cemeteries in the Township: Dean Hill and Cornersburg
- Township are required to take care of these Cemeteries - and we do!
- Significant recent improvements to Cornersburg Cemetery
- We continuously repair older headstones, remove dead trees, and pave drives
- New signs and fence plus platted new burial section at Dean Hill
Zoning
- I believe Zoning is the backbone of any Community
- Completed the 2040 Comprehensive Land Use Plan
- Focused on removing the blight, adopted a junk vehicle policy
- Complete re-write of the Township Zoning Resolution
- Strong zoning inspector and boards serving the Township well
Next Steps for Zoning:
- Fully execute our new Zoning Resolution
- Software updates for cloud-based usage
- Scan and electronically save all paper maps
- Continue abating properties as needed
- Fully execute our Junk Vehicle Policy
Township Community Park
- Residents told us they want a well-kept park in their community
- I recently led the charge to make several necessary improvements, for example: Power washed and painted the multipurpose building, update the worn picnic tables, replaced aging security cameras and equipment, added safety poles to better protect all that use the fields
- Breaking ground for (4) pickleball courts and a parking lot in September of 2025 all paid for by private donations and grant money
Next Steps for your Park:
- Finish creating a resident lead park committee
- More playground equipment for smaller children
- Add Bocce Courts-with a covered pavilion
- Pave the drives
- Outdoor Amphitheater for community events
