Township Updates and Accomplishments

Note: The following is a brief recap and accomplishments during my time in office along with thoughts about the future.  I am honored to have been voted as Chair of the Board of Trustees multiple times and a lot has been accomplished.  But, I have to say, thank you all the employees of Canfield Township, they make the plans happen! You all need to know that we have a great dedicated team that really cares about the Township!

A few recent accomplishments:

  • Unanimously elected Chair of the Board multiple times
  • Lead negotiator with public works union. Reached fair agreements
  • Lead negotiator with City of Canfield and Schools for joint Resource Officer program
  • Lead negotiator with Mahoning County Sheriff for Township police services
  • Worked to negotiate an updated field agreement with the Canfield Soccer Club

        Led the following:

  • Installation of new streetlights for residents on a few township roads
  • Updates at the community park
  • Restoration of township hall- upstairs
  • Significant technology updates and hall, park, and public works

Finances/Budget

  • We operate very efficiently and always within budget, no major audit findings
  • Canfield Township has no additional levies (like road or police) or income taxes and no plans to add any! We operate on what we have!
  • Your tax dollars are leveraged to obtain grants for many projects
  • Significant investments with great amounts of interest returned every year
  • Generators installed at hall and public works with grant money.
  • Digital Sign on the green with grant money.
  • Pickleball courts to be built with private donations and grant money

         Next Step for the Budget:

  • Be prepared for any and all changes ie: property tax changes
  • Continue the close working relationship with the Fiscal Officer
  • Keep analyzing every line and asking questions like “why”
  • No plans to ask for any levies from Township residents
  • Go after as many grants as possible

Roads

  • Currently working on a 5-year plan to pave entire developments along with roads close to each development
  • Capitalizing on the .25% sales tax money

2023 - Covington Cove Development, part of Summit

2024 - Villa Rosa Development, Sperone, Woodland Place

                          Timbercrest, Mission Hills, August Hills.

Plus, Briarwood Court Project-Curb, Gutter, Paving

2025 - Fox Den Development, Meadowview, McCarty

2026 - Westbury Development, possibly others

  • Annual street sweeping all curb and gutter streets
  • Continue to support the best snow and ice removal crew in the County!

         Next Step for Roads:

  • Work an updated 5-year paving plan
  • Will include catch basins, pipes curbs and gutters
  • Continue with additional developments
  • Pave as many roads as possible (provided .25% sales tax continues)

Infrastructure

  • Canfield Township consistently leads Mahoning County in housing starts
  • The majority of our catch basins and cross over pipes are repaired in house saving thousands of dollars
  • Many projects by and with the ABC Water and Storm Water District to help in areas that the township is not permitted to work in
  • Revere Run storm sewer replacement
  • Implemented a Right of Way permitting process to protect against outside companies randomly “putting line in the ground”

Safety in your Township

  • Canfield Township is one of the safest communities in the County
  • Township police services are provided through an agreement with the Mahoning County Sheriff.
  • By outsourcing this, we save hundreds of thousands of dollars and no tax levy is required.
  • Trustees receive monthly reports of police activity and are made aware of any urgent matters in real time in the Township

         Next Steps for Policing:

  • Continue and enhance current agreement with Sheriff
  • Add more patrols to monitor speeding and have a stronger presence

Public Works

  • Keeping the Township moving …and we provide the vehicles and equipment
  • A few newer equipment purchases; new plow trucks, enclosed trailer for hauling equipment, camera to record water/sewer lines, and a sewer truck
  • Daily contact with residents for things like jet pipes, install pipes, repair sinkholes, tree work of all types, install signs, pick up dead animals, repairs of all types

Cemeteries

  • We have two 2 cemeteries in the Township: Dean Hill and Cornersburg
  • Township are required to take care of these Cemeteries - and we do!
  • Significant recent improvements to Cornersburg Cemetery
  • We continuously repair older headstones, remove dead trees, and pave drives
  • New signs and fence plus platted new burial section at Dean Hill

Zoning

  • I believe Zoning is the backbone of any Community
  • Completed the 2040 Comprehensive Land Use Plan
  • Focused on removing the blight, adopted a junk vehicle policy
  • Complete re-write of the Township Zoning Resolution
  • Strong zoning inspector and boards serving the Township well

         Next Steps for Zoning:

  • Fully execute our new Zoning Resolution
  • Software updates for cloud-based usage
  • Scan and electronically save all paper maps
  • Continue abating properties as needed
  • Fully execute our Junk Vehicle Policy

Township Community Park

  • Residents told us they want a well-kept park in their community
  • I recently led the charge to make several necessary improvements, for example: Power washed and painted the multipurpose building, update the worn picnic tables, replaced aging security cameras and equipment, added safety poles to better protect all that use the fields
  • Breaking ground for (4) pickleball courts and a parking lot in September of 2025 all paid for by private donations and grant money

         Next Steps for your Park:

  • Finish creating a resident lead park committee
  • More playground equipment for smaller children
  • Add Bocce Courts-with a covered pavilion
  • Pave the drives
  • Outdoor Amphitheater for community events
